Abnormal Noise Diagnosis

There are various types of noise, ranging from those produced in the engine compartment to those from the
passenger compartment, also from rumbling noises to whistling noises.

Abnormal Noise Symptom Diagnosis of A/C System

Abnormal Noise from Compressor
Condition
During compressor
operation, a rumbling
noise is heard
proportional to engine
revolutions
A loud noise is heard at a
certain rpm,
disproportionately to
engine revolution
A loud rattle is heard at
low engine rpm
Possible cause
Wiring connection faulty
Expansion valve faulty
Excessive moisture in A/C system
Magnet clutch faulty
Excessive amount of refrigerant
Condenser clogged
Insufficient charge of refrigerant
Air in A/C system
Compressor drive belt loosened or
broken
Compressor faulty
Excessive amount of refrigerant
A/C evaporator frosted
A/C evaporator clogged or frosted
Air leaking from HVAC unit or air duct
Blower motor faulty
Wiring or grounding faulty
Possible cause
Inadequate clearance in scroll area
Loose or faulty compressor drive belt
Loose compressor mounting bolts
Loose compressor armature plate bolt
Air Conditioning System:
Correction / Reference Item
Repair as necessary.
Check expansion valve referring to "Expansion
Valve On-Vehicle Inspection".
Replace desiccant, and then perform
evacuation and charge referring to "Operation
Procedure for Charging A/C with Refrigerant".
Check magnet clutch referring to "Magnet
Clutch Operating Check for M16 Engine
Model", "Magnet Clutch Operating Check for
J20 Engine Model" or "Magnet Clutch
Operating Check (F9Q Engine Model)".
Check the amount of refrigerant.
Check condenser referring to "A/C Condenser
Assembly On-Vehicle Inspection".
Check the amount of refrigerant and system
for leaks.
Replace desiccant, and then perform
evacuation and charge referring to "Operation
Procedure for Charging A/C with Refrigerant".
Adjust or replace drive belt.
Check compressor.
Check the amount of refrigerant.
Check A/C evaporator and evaporator
temperature sensor referring to "A/C
Evaporator Inspection" and "A/C Evaporator
Temperature Sensor Inspection".
Check A/C evaporator and evaporator
temperature sensor referring to "A/C
Evaporator Inspection" and "A/C Evaporator
Temperature Sensor Inspection".
Repair as necessary.
Check blower motor referring to "Blower Motor
Inspection in Section 7A".
Repair as necessary.
Correction / Reference Item
Replace compressor.
Adjust drive belt tension or replace drive belt.
Retighten mounting bolts.
Retighten armature plate bolt.
Replace compressor if it was operated in this
condition for a long time.
