2. The remote computer answers, asks your for your
password (if any), then shows you a menu of options.
3. You choose the option that lets you download a file.
The remote computer asks you for the name of the file
that you want to download, followed by the download
protocol that you want to use.You'll choose Xmodem,
Zmodem, or some other protocol.
That protocol that you choose must be the same proto-
col that you told your communications software to use
before dialing.
4. The remote computer begins sending the file. Your
computer will ask you where you want to save the
incoming file (which drive, directory, etc.). The file is
then sent.
Downloading from the Internet with FTP and HTTP
For downloading large files over the Internet, the most
common protocol that you will be using is FTP, or File
Transfer Protocol.
If you go to a web site and download a file or program,
you are most likely opening an FTP session. In other
words, your computer requests the file from the server,
and the server begins sending the file. You then have the
option of saving it to your hard drive under any name
that you would like.
A common saying that you have probably heard is "FTP
it!" which is basically what you do when you grab a file
off of the Internet.
FTP is simple in that you can browse files using an FTP
client. An FTP client is a software application that
allows you to connect with an FTP server and either
