The outboard motor can be tilted up partially to allow oper-
ation in shallow water.

If the engine speed is suddenly increased when the
outboard motor is partially tilted up, the power trim
and tilt unit could be damaged.

Do not tilt the outboard motor up so that the cooling
water inlet on the lower unit is above the surface of the
water when setting up for and cruising in shallow wa-
ter. Otherwise severe damage from overheating can
result.

TIP:
When the outboard motor is partially tilted up for shallow wa-
ter operation, the engine speed may be controlled around
2000 r/min. The engine speed is controlled to protect the
power trim and tilt unit and does not indicate a malfunction.
For instructions on de-activating the engine speed control
system, see page 48.

Procedure for power trim and tilt models
1.
Place the control lever in neutral.
2.
Slightly tilt the outboard motor up to the desired position
using the power trim and tilt switch. WARNING! Using
the power trim and tilt switch on the bottom cowling
while the boat is moving or engine is on could in-
crease the risk of falling overboard and could dis-
tract the operator, increasing the risk of collision
with another boat or an obstacle.
3.
To return the outboard motor to the normal running po-
sition, press the power trim and tilt switch and slowly tilt
the outboard motor down.

De-activating the engine speed control system

This procedure must be done out of the shallow water.
Otherwise, the outboard motor may hits an object in the
water as tilting down.
1.
Close the throttle so that the engine slows to idle speed.
2.
After the engine is at idle speed in gear, move the con-
trol lever firmly and crisply into the neutral position.
