Tilt the outboard motor down. Check that the tilt rod and
trim rods operate smoothly.

Battery

Check the battery's charge. If your boat is equipped with a
Yamaha digital speedometer, the voltmeter and low battery
alert functions will help you monitor the battery's charge. A
battery in good condition will provide a minimum of 12 volts.
Check that the battery connections are clean, secure and
covered by insulating covers. The electrical connections of
the battery and cables must be clean and properly connect-
ed or the battery will not start the engine.
If the battery needs charging, consult your Yamaha dealer or
the battery manufacturer's instructions.

Filling fuel

WARNING
 Gasoline and its vapors are highly flammable and ex-
plosive. Always refuel according to this procedure to
reduce the risk of fire and explosion.
 Gasoline is poisonous and can cause injury or death.
Handle gasoline with care. Never siphon gasoline by
mouth. If you should swallow some gasoline or inhale
a lot of gasoline vapor, or get some gasoline in your
eyes, see your doctor immediately. If gasoline spills on
your skin, wash with soap and water. If gasoline spills
on your clothing, change your clothes.

NOTICE
Check the amount of remaining fuel regularly. Running
out of fuel can damage the engine.

Make sure that the engine is stopped.
2.
Make sure that the boat is in a well-ventilated outdoor
area, either securely moored or trailered.
3.
Make sure that no one is in the boat.
4.
Do not smoke and keep away from sparks, flames, stat-
ic electric discharge, or other sources of ignition.
5.
If you use a portable container to store and dispense fu-
el, only use a locally approved GASOLINE container.
6.
Touch the fuel nozzle to the filler opening or funnel to
help prevent electrostatic sparks.

This product emits exhaust gases which contain carbon
monoxide, a colorless, odorless gas which could cause
brain damage or death when inhaled. Symptoms include
nausea, dizziness, and drowsiness. Keep cockpit and
cabin areas well ventilated. Avoid blocking exhaust out-
lets.

Starting engine

Before starting the engine, make sure that the boat is
tightly moored and that you can steer clear of any ob-
structions. Be sure there are no swimmers in the water
near you.

Procedure for starting engine

 Failure to attach the engine shut-off cord could result
in a runaway boat if operator is ejected. Attach the en-
gine shut-off cord to a secure place on your clothing,
or your arm or leg while operating. Do not attach the

Tighten the fuel tank cap securely.
Wipe up any spilled gasoline immediately with dry rags.

If there is a fuel joint or a fuel valve on the boat, firmly
connect the fuel line to the joint or open the fuel valve.
Squeeze the primer pump, with the arrow pointing up,
until you feel it become firm.
