The VRF and IPVPN functionalities used in this design requires the use of ERS 8600 R
or RS I/O Modules, 8692SF/CPU fitted with Super-Mezzanine daughter card, Premium
Software License and Software 5.0 or higher.

1.3.2 L2 VPN design

L2 VPN services will be provided by creating native VLANs on top of the SMLT design; these VLANs will
not have an IP assigned and can be added/dropped at any site. A suitable range of Vlan-ids will be
reserved for these L2 VLANs; in this configuration guide Vlan-ids 2-99 are reserved for this purpose. As
illustrated in Figure 3, Vlan-id 12 is spanned across 3 sites. Please note that any of these L2 VLANs must
always be configured on both Main Sites 1 & 2 (SMLT IST cluster) and only on the ERS 8600 SMLT edge
switches that require the VLAN(s). Pertaining to figure 3 above, L2 VLAN 12 must be added to the SMLT
IST cluster switches at sites 1 and 2 and then added at Sites 3 and 5. At sites 2, 3 and 5, L2 VLAN 12 will
also be configured on one or more edge facing interfaces.
