8.1. Trouble shooting - engine

Failure
Electric starter does not work when
actuating the start button
Electric starter rotates but doesn´t
engage when actuating the start button
Engine does not start
Engine does not operate at idle speed
and stops running
Engine has a performance drop at
approx. 7.000 r.p.m.

Electric connections wrong
Wiring harness damaged
Battery not connected
Voltage of battery insufficient
Electric starter defective
Starter gear contaminated
Gap at shift contact too small
Voltage of battery insufficient
Spark plug defective
Insufficient fuel in fuel tank
No fuel supply to the carburetor
Fuel supply lines mis-connected
Fuel filter clogged
Wiring harness damaged
Bad idling adjustment of carburetor
Carburetor adjustment of air/fuel mixture
composition for idling is not correct
Shift point of exhaust valve not correct
Exhaust valve is coked

Remedy
Check connections, see routing of wiring
harness
Replace wiring harness
Check battery connection
Change battery or recharge
Check electric starter, repair / renew if
needed
Clean starter gear
Adjust gap accordingly
Change battery or recharge it, see Battery
and Battery Recharger
Replace spark plug
refuel
Check connections of fuel pump
Correct fuel supply connections
Replace fuel filter
Replace wiring harness
Adjust idle speed
Adjust air/fuel mixture composition for idling
Adjust switch point of exhaust valve
correctly
Clean exhaust valve
