Solar power system
In order to design a solar power system you will have to first determine your estimated electrical needs.
Determine How Much Electricity You Will Use
• Calculate Your Total Daily Amp Hour usage
• Calculate how many Solar Panels you will need
• Calculate what size of Batteries you will need
Calculate Your Total Daily Amp Hour usage
List AC load items
Total Wh/week
DC watt hours per week. Multiply line ① by 1.15 to correct for inverter loss.
Inverter DC input voltage; This is DC system voltage.
Divide line ② by line ③ . This is total amp hours per week used by AC loads.
List DC load items
Total Wh/week
DC system voltage.
Total amp hours per week used by DC loads. Divide line ⑤ by line ⑥ .
Total amp hours per week used by AC loads from line ④
Add lines ⑦ and ⑧ . This is total amp hours per week used by all loads.
Divide line ⑨ by 7 days. This is total average amp hours per day.
Calculate how many Solar Panels you will need
Total average amp hours per day
Divide line ① by 0.8 to compensate for loss from battery charge/discharge
Average sun hours per day in your area
Divide line ② by line ③ . for total amps required
Multiply line ④ by 1.15 to correct for generating loss.
Continuous non-sunshine days in your area
Multiply line ⑤ and line ⑥ for total solar array amps required.
Peak amps of solar module used
Total number of solar modules in parallel. Divide line ⑦ by ⑧ .
Round off to the next highest whole number.
Calculate what size of Batteries you will need
Total average amp hours per day
Divide line ① by 0.8 to compensate for loss from battery charge/discharge
Continuous non-sunshine days in your area
Multiply line ② and line ③ for total Wh required.
DC system voltage.
Divide line ④ by line ⑤ for required Ah.
Safety factor
Multiply line ⑥ and line ⑦ for total battery capacity Ah required.
