4. Slide one of the modems partially out of the
carrier.
5. Refresh the screen. Both M leads of the modem
pair should be ON.
6. Replace the modem and refresh the screen. Verify
that the E and M leads are now in the OFF state.
The M lead from the PSTN trunk should be in the same
state as the E lead of the cellular trunk; the M lead of the
cellular trunk should be in the same state as the E lead
from the PSTN.
During dialing, the cellular trunk's E lead and the
PSTN trunk's M lead should be ON.
When the connection is completed, all E and M
leads should be ON.
Place a Voice Call Through the WDG
Procedure
1. Using a cellular phone, place a call through the
WDG using the *DATA (*3282) prefix before a
known voice telephone number.
2. Verify that all E and M leads for the modem pair
are in the ON state when the call is answered.
Verify that the audio quality is good.
There will be no indication on the modem or the AAC
that the voice call is in progress.
Place a Data Call Through the WDG
Using a PCMCIA modem, call another modem using
the *DATA prefix. When the 2100 Hz answer tone is
detected, the modems will begin to train. When the
modems are active, the DIAL LEDs on the modems are
steadily lit.
Use the SDCP to check that the modems display the
current VF rate. (Select the carrier and modem. Then
select Status, and VF.) The SDCP displays Online:rate
(where rate is a VF rate in kbps) for active modems.
6-2
The VF rate displayed on the
SDCP can help you spot
modems that have not been
properly configured. The display
should say Idle:19.2 for inactive
modems in odd-numbered slots
and Idle:28.8 for inactive
modems in even-numbered
slots.

Problems and Solutions

Modems continually retrain
If modems initially train properly, but then retrain
every few seconds, a T1 timing slip is probably occurring.
Verify that T1 timing comes from the customer's
network. Check and re-save the AAC configuration
options.
Data calls do not go through the WDG
A special access code is required to activate access to
the WDG. This code instructs the cellular switch to route
calls through the WDG. Examples of access codes (also
called star-codes because of their leading asterisks) are
*DATA (*3282) and *MODEM (*66336). Check the
special routing functions to ensure that the star-code is
causing the data call to be routed through the WDG.
Make sure that the WDG is powered on.
Check the WAN card menu of the AAC to make sure
that the T1 or E1 connection is valid (there are no red or
yellow alarms indicated).
Check the Test menu under the 4-Wire E&M screen of
the AAC and verify that the E-lead and M-lead states
indicate off.
