Introduction
The operation of the WDG can be tested by the
installer. This chapter describes the behavior of WDG
components in normal and error conditions, and offers
suggestions for testing and debugging.
Normal Operation
During normal operation, each gateway channel
remains idle until it detects modem answer tone on the
voiceband. Upon detection, the modems automatically
train with the remote cellular and PSTN modems. When
the modems are active, the DIAL LED on their card edge
is lit.
When the WDG detects that either remote modem has
hung up, both WDG modems will automatically return to
idle mode.
When a WDG modem is active, or is in the process of
returning to idle mode, it asserts the Off-hook state on its
M lead to prevent the switch from selecting it in a hunt
group.
The WDG always attempts to match the modulation
and error correction (EC) protocol of the remote cellular
and PSTN modems. In addition, the WDG rejects calls on
the cellular connection which attempt to connect without
an EC protocol. (Calls on the PSTN, however, are allowed
to connect without an EC protocol.)

System Checkout
Use the suggestions in this section to check out a
newly-installed WDG.
Check for NIM Activation
Approximately four seconds after power-up the NIMs
should make a clicking noise as relays are activated to
support voice pass-through mode.
If no clicking occurs, verify the configuration of the
modems and the installation of the NIMs.
Check the T1 Trunks
Monitor the AAC using the VT-100 control terminal.
Verify that all T1 alarms are cleared after the T1 trunks
are connected. (This may take several seconds.)
Check the E&M Leads
Procedure
1. Select the E&M Card menu on the control
terminal.
2. Type t for Test mode.
3. Verify that the E and M leads are all in the OFF
state. (Remember that the screen is not
automatically refreshed. Type r to refresh the
screen.)
