Check Piston Skirt Clearance

1. Insert an inside micrometer approximately
one inch into the bottom of the cylinder bore.
Take the measurement from front to back.
II NOTE: If the measurements of step 1 and
step 2 vary by more than 0.05 mm or 0.002
of-an-inch, the cylinder must be replaced.

Check Cylinder Wear
1. Insert an inside micrometer, cylinder gauge
or snap gauge into the cylinder bore,
approximately 3/8-inch below the top of the
cylinder bore and take two measurements;
the first, front to back; the second, side to
side. If the measurements vary by more than
0.05 mm or 0.002 of-an-inch, or if the piston
skirt/cylinder clearance is not within the
acceptable tolerance range, the cylinder
must be replaced. (See chart on page 41).
Special instruments are needed for measuring
critical parts and tolerances. The tools shown
must be kept in the shop area, must be kept clean
at all times, and must be handled properly.
