  • Page 496: Rtp Multiplexing (Throughpacket)

Mediant 2000 9.15 RTP Multiplexing (ThroughPacket) The device supports a proprietary method to aggregate RTP streams from several channels. This reduces the bandwidth overhead caused by the attached Ethernet, IP, UDP, and RTP headers and reduces the packet/data transmission rate. This option reduces the load on network routers and can typically save 50% (e.g., for G.723) on IP bandwidth.
  • Page 497 SIP User's Manual 9. IP Telephony Capabilities The default settings of 10 msec Minimum delay and 10 Optimization Factor should provide a good compromise between delay and error rate. The jitter buffer ‘holds’ incoming packets for 10 msec before making them available for decoding into voice. The coder polls frames from the buffer at regular intervals in order to produce continuous speech.

  • Page 501: Stun

SIP User's Manual 10. Networking Capabilities The design of SIP creates a problem for VoIP traffic to pass through NAT. SIP uses IP addresses and port numbers in its message body and the NAT server can’t modify SIP messages and therefore, can’t change local to global addresses. Two different streams traverse through NAT: signaling and media.
