Chapter 9: Converting Windows Installer Packages to Virtual Applications
Getting Started With Application Virtualization
when you distribute a virtual package using Citrix XenApp, you can only select one shortcut. If you want this
virtual suite to have more than one shortcut, you will need to distribute it more than once.
Batch Conversion
Edition •
The Batch Convert option of Windows Installer Converter is only available when purchased on the
AdminStudio desktop licensing model.
You can use the Batch Convert option to convert a directory full of Windows Installer packages into individual
virtual packages. You may already have your enterprise packages organized into a directory structure. The Batch
Convert option allows you to simply take that entire directory structure, optionally run a test conversion, and then
convert all of the applications in that directory in one operation. This operation will not modify the existing
installation data files. It will perform the conversion operation and save the virtual packages in new subdirectories.
Tip •
It is recommended that each of these Windows Installer packages be in a separate subdirectory of the
selected directory.
When using the Batch Convert option, any Windows Installer transform files that are colocated in the same
directory with a Windows Installer package file are identified and examined to determine if they can be applied to
that Windows Installer package. Those that are confirmed are ordered by file last modified date (oldest to
youngest) and are included in the virtual package.
Note •
If you select the Evaluate package(s) for virtualization suitability option on the Conversion Mode
panel, the package(s) is tested prior to conversion. After viewing the test results, you can choose the packages you
want to convert. See
Other Methods of Conversion
In addition to using the Windows Installer Converter, you can use several other methods to create a virtual
application:
InstallShield Editor Microsoft App-V Assistant, ThinApp Assistant, and Citrix
of these Assistants, you can configure file, folder, and registry key isolation options before building a virtual
package.
