BACKLIGHT COMPENSATION

The best way to photograph dark subjects in front of a
bright background is to use backlight compensation.
This makes the detail in the subject stand out more
clearly.
1. Press the button for the extended flash modes until
the sun symbol
is displayed in the LCD panel.
2. This mode lets you increase exposure by 1.5 EV.
Notes:
• Backlight compensation involves slower shutter
speeds. This means you'll need to keep the camera
steady or support it on a firm base or a tripod.

• When you're shooting into strong light sources (sun,
floodlighting at sporting events or rock concerts),
stray light can result in a low-contrast picture.

Hints:
• Use backlight compensation when fill-in flash won't
do the job (page 74) because the main subject is out-
side the flash range.
• Backlight compensation is recommended if fill-in flash
would spoil the effect of the natural lighting.
• Don't just use backlight compensation for pictures
taken against the sun or the bright sky. It is also a
great help when taking photographs in the snow, on a
bright sandy beach or on water where glare is a prob-
lem.
