Configuring an Ethernet Interface as a Layer 2 Access
To configure an Ethernet Interface as a Layer 2 access use the following commands beginning in global
configuration mode:

Router(config)# interface {ethernet |
fastethernet} slot/port
Step 2
Router(config-if)# shutdown
Step 3
Router(config-if)# switchport mode access
Step 4
Router(config-if)# switchport access vlan vlan-num
Step 5
Router(config-if)# no shutdown
Step 6
Router(config-if)# end
Verifying an Ethernet Interface as a Layer 2 Access
Step 1
Use the show running-config interface command to verify the running configuration of the interface:
Router# show running-config interface {ethernet | fastethernet} slot/port
Use the show interfaces command to verify the switch port configuration of the interface:
Step 1
Router# show interfaces [ethernet | fastethernet] slot/port switchport

Configuring VLANs
(optional)
Deleting a VLAN from the Database
Purpose
Selects the interface to configure.
(Optional) Shuts down the interface to prevent traffic
flow until configuration is complete.
Encapsulation is always dot1q.
Configures the interface as a Layer 2 access.
For access ports, specifies the access VLAN.
Activates the interface. (Required only if you shut down
the interface.)
Exits configuration mode.
(optional)
