NOTE
For
smooth operation,
depress
the
brake
pedal when
shifting from
N (Neutral) to
a for-
ward or reverse
position.
CAUTION
Shift into
R
or
P
only
when
the vehicle has
come to a complete
stop.
Do
not
accelerate the
engine
in reverse
or
any
of
the forward
positions
wh ile
the
brakes
are
applied.
When
stopped on
an
upgrade, do
not
hold
the vehicle with the
engine power.
Depress
the brake
pedal.
Do
not
shift from
N
or
P
into
reverse
or
any of
the forward positions
when
the
en-
gine
is
above
idle
speed.
Engine starting
The selector
must
be in
P
or
N position,
otherwise
the starter wi
ll
not
operate.
NOTE
For
extra
power
when passing
another
ve-
hicle
or
climbing steep
grades, depress
the
accelerator fully, at which
time the
transmis-
sion will
shift down
into
the
next
lower gear.
Moving up steep grade from standing
start
To
move
up
a steep grade from a standing
start, depress
the
brake
pedal,
shift
the
selector lever to D, S
or
L,
depending on
load weight
and
steepness
of
the grade
then
release
the
parking
brake.
Depress the
accelerator pedal
gradually
with
you
r
right foot
while
releasing
the
brake
pedal.
P (Park)
Th
is
position
locks
the
transmission
and
pre-
vents the rear wheels
from
rotating.
Use only
when
the vehicle
is
completely
stopped.
WARNING!
Do
not
use
the
P
position
in
pl ace
of
the
parking
brake.
Always
make sure
the selector lever is
latched
in
P by
c hecking to see
that
it
can-
not
be moved
unless
the
selector button
is
pushed
.
Also
SET
TH
E
PARKING
BRAKE
FULLY.
Turn
off the
ignition when you
leave
the
ve-
hicle,
even
momentarily.
Never leave
the
ve-
hicle
unattended
while
the engine
is
running.
Unexpected and possibly sudden
vehicle
movement
may occur
if
these precautions
are
not
taken
.
R (Reverse)
This position allows
the veh icle
to
move
backward.

N
(Neutral)
For
standing (brakes
applied).
The wheels
and
transmission are
not
locked
.
D (Drive)
This
is
the
normal
driving position, and
the
transmission
wil
l
automatical
ly
shift
through
a
four-gear
sequence,
providing
best econ-
omy and power.
S (Second)
Manually
shift
the
selector
lever
to
this
posi-
tion
for
driving
in
heavy, slow-moving
traf-
fic,
when
climbing
hills or
for
braking
assist
when
going
down
hills.
L (Low)
Shift
the
selector
lever
to
this
position
in
hard-
pulling situations and
for
climbing and
descending
very
steep
grades.
