Use only the specified automatic transmis-
sion fluid (refer to chart on page 6-33).
3. Clean the d ipstick cap, pull out the d ip-
stick, w ipe clean and reinsert fu lly.
4. Pull out again. The level should be be-
tween the L and F marks on the gauge.
5. Add fluid through the fil ler tube if neces-
sary. Do not overfill .
CHECKING BRAKE PEDAL
• Checking brake pedal f reeplay
Turn off the engine and depress the
brake pedal several times in order to de-
plete the vacuum in the power brake unit.
Gently depress the brake pedal by hand
and measure the d istance it moves until
slight resistance is felt.
If the freeplay is more or less than specifi-
cation, have the brakes adjusted by your
Authorized Mazda Dealer.

• Checking brake pedal clearance
Start the engine and check the brake
pedal
for smooth operation
and proper
clearance when it is fully depressed (ap-
proximately 132 lb [60 kg, 589 N]). Th e
clearance is measured between the cen-
ter of the up per surface of the brake ped-
al pad and the floorboard.
If the clearance is less than about 3 .94
in (100mm), have the brakes adjusted by
your Authorized Mazda Dealer.
