THEFT-DETERRENT SYSTEM
(if equipped)
The
Theft-deterrent system is
designed
to
prevent
your
vehicle
or
its
contents from be-
ing
stolen
when
all
the
doors,
hood
and
hatch/trunklid
are
locked.
If
any attempt is
made to forcibl
y
open
any
of
these
without
using
the
key,
the system
causes the
horn
to sound
and
the
hazard
warning lights and
headlights
to
flash.
In ad-
dition to
this the starter
becomes
inoperable.
CAUTION
This system
will
not fu
nction unless it is
armed.
Therefore, when
you
leave your
ve-
hicle, be sure
all
doors are
locked, take your
key with
you,
and
confi
rm
that the system
indicator
lamp
comes
on.

details
on arming
the
system)
OPERATION
Causes of alarm operation
The
warning alarm is
activated
by
any
of
the
f
oll
owing:
• Forcing
open
the
door
or
hatch/trunklid
.
Opening
the
door
or hatch/trunklid
by
releasing the
inside
door
lock
button
or
by operating
the
remote hatc
h/trunklid
release.
Opening
the
hood.
Alarm description
The
alarm
system operates
in
the following
manner.
The horn
sounds
intermittently
and
the
hazard warni ng
lamps
and
headlights
flash.
The
starter is
bypassed
so
the
engine
cannot
be started.
The alarm continues
for
four
to six
minutes and
then automatically stops.
If
the
system is
triggered
again,
the
lam
ps
and
horn
will
reactivate
and
the starter
will
continue
to
be
disabled until the
door
or
hatch/trunklid
is
unlocked with
the
key.
Th

can be done
with
the door
open
or
closed,
but
with
the
hatch/trunkli
d
dosed
only.

NOTE
The
Theft-Deterrent
System can
be
turn
ed
off
(de-armed) by
turning
the ignition
switch
to the
ON
position. However, if the
system
is
in the ALARM
phase (horn
,
lights, having
been
activated
and
starter
disabled), the
sys-
tem
CANNOT be
turned
off
using
the
igni-
tion
switch.
Once the system
has
reached
the
ALARM
phase,
it
may only
be
deactivat-
ed
by
using
the
key
in
the
door
or
hatch/trunklid
.
