Installing the Mower Deck

1. Slide the mower deck under the machine.
2. Rotate the caster wheels rearward.
3. Connect the deck hangers to the lift plates using
the 2 bolts, 2 nuts, and 2 washers that you
retained for each side of the mower deck.
Note:
Mount the front hanger brackets on the
outside of the front lift arms for 52-inch decks
(Figure 87). Mount the front hanger brackets on
the inside of the front lift arms for 60-inch decks
(Figure 88).
Note:
Torque the bolts to 38 to 49 N∙m (28 to
36 ft-lb).
4. Install the 2 bolts that you retained to connect
the strut bracket to the frame
Note:
Torque the bolts to 61 to 75 N∙m (45 to
55 ft-lb).
5. Install the mower-deck belt; refer to
Maintenance (page

Note:
You do not need to level the mower deck
if the adjustment hardware was not loosened
when the mower deck was removed.

Preparing the Machine
Ensure that the mower deck is level any time you
install the mower deck or when you see an uneven
cut on your lawn.
Level the mower deck side to side before adjusting
the front-to-rear slope.
1. Park the machine on a level surface, disengage
the PTO, and engage the parking brake.
2. Shut off the engine, remove the key, and
disconnect the spark-plug wires from the spark
plugs.
3. Check the tire pressure of both drive tires; refer
to Checking the Tire Pressure (page
4. Check the mower deck for bent blades; remove
and replace any bent blades; refer to
the Cutting Blades (page
5. Lower the mower deck to the 76 mm (3 inch)
height-of-cut position.
