Operating
the Osprey
If a laptop is used, make sure that the laptop is left switched on to power the USB port and
is connected to power to prevent the laptop battery from discharging.
The recharge time is highly dependent on the mode of operation of the Osprey during
recharging and the rating of the PC USB port. Depending on the rating of the USB port, if
the Osprey is left switched on during charging, the battery could continue to discharge.

Battery Life

Battery life from a single charge may extend to several days under ideal operating conditions. Usage
factors affecting battery life include:
Initial charge state of the battery and operating temperature (reduced capacity at the low
end of temperature range).
Settings and usage (e.g. the number of messages sent).
Tracking, receive and alert time intervals. These are configurable from 2 minutes to one day
through ViewPoint.
Sky view. If sky view is poor and messages cannot be delivered, the Osprey remains on for
longer while attempting to acquire the satellite.
Note: In addition to being reported by the Battery Charge Status icon (see page 13), battery state is
reported to ViewPoint within all automatic and user-generated messages.
Note: When there is only one bar of battery capacity remaining, the Osprey will automatically power
down enabling only the Alert function to be used with the remaining battery power reserve.

Battery Replacement

The battery must be replaced only by competent personnel using an approved spare. Observe the
