6Appendix A – Personal Tracker Uploader

Introduction

The Personal Tracker (PT) Uploader application is software that enables you to:
•
Update the firmware in the Osprey. New firmware may be released from time to time to
provide feature updates.
•
Charge the Osprey from a USB port of a computer (see page 19).
•
Install a new codebook in the Osprey.
When a message is transmitted from the Osprey to ViewPoint (or vice versa), each string in
the message (e.g. "Immediate Emergency") is sent as a code, rather than as text. The
codebook translates the code into the correct text string. This reduces the amount of data to
transmit, but requires the sender and receiver to use the same codebook to ensure that the
messages have the same meaning at both ends. In the unlikely event that the codebooks
are different, the message at the receiving end contains the other operator's location, but
has no message content. This is to prevent confusion if a message code has a different
meaning at each end. It is the responsibility of the ViewPoint operator or fleet manger to
ensure that all Ospreys in a fleet use the same codebook.
For minor updates, a ViewPoint operator can update the codebook installed in the Osprey
through the satellite link. In this case, the content of affected messages in the mailbox is
replaced by "Codebook Updated. Message Invalid".
Note: Updating the codebook using the PT Uploader clears all existing messages.
The Personal Tracker Uploader application and associated manual is available as a download from
EMS Global Tracking (software number SWN-0105).
Important: Do not connect the Osprey to the USB port of a computer until the PT Uploader is
installed.
