CUTTING PLASTIC COATED METALS

When cutting plastic coated metals with a contact style profiler, sometimes the plastic coating will "balloon" due to
the pressure of the assist gas. This may cause the stylus foot to ride on the plastic causing the focus point to be lost
and subsequently the cut is lost or becomes poor. There are a few techniques that can be used to correct this
situation.
1) PROFILER OFF METHOD (FOR SMALL HOLES AND PARTS LESS THAN 4")
After piercing, adjust the nozzle to the proper gap using the G87 command and then turn off the
profiler. With the profiler off, if the plastic balloons when the high pressure is commanded for
cutting, the focus will not be effected because the profiler is not activated and the "Z" axis height is
locked in position. Since cutting is being performed in a small area, it is very unlikely that the
material is so uneven that the focus will be affected.

2) PRE-BURNING THE PIERCE POINT METHOD
When cutting thin materials which require cutting pressures less than 6 kg/cm
plastic will balloon after the assist gas is switched to high pressure for cutting. It may be possible
to melt the plastic at the pierce point so that the initial change in pressure does not get under the
coating. Once cutting has begun the plastic will typically not "balloon" up at lower pressures.
