METHODS TO PREVENT BURNING OF CORNERS

WHEN CUTTING THICK MILD STEEL ( 3/16" AND ABOVE ), A CUTTING CONDITION THAT WORKS
WELL FOR A STRAIGHT LINE CUT MAY STILL HAVE TROUBLE WHEN MAKING SHARP TURNS OR
CUTTING INTRICATE GEOMETRY'S. THEREFORE, WHEN PROGRAMMING PARTS, THE GEOMETRY
MUST BE CONSIDERED AND THE APPROPRIATE TECHNIQUES IMPLEMENTED IN ORDER TO
ACHIEVE THE BEST RESULTS. THE FOLLOWING METHODS CAN BE USED TO MINIMIZE THE HEAT
EFFECT OFTEN ENCOUNTERED WHEN CUTTING THICKER PLATE.
1> RADIUS CORNER: THE EASIEST WAY TO PREVENT BURNING OF CORNERS IS TO PROGRAM A
2> CORNER LOOP:
3> POWER RAMPING: POWER RAMPING WILL ALLOW THE MACHINE TO AUTOMATICALLY

SMALL RADIUS AT EACH CORNER. WHETHER OR NOT THIS IS PRACTICAL
DEPENDS ON THE APPLICATION OF THE PART. IF THE PART IS TO BE
WELDED OR USED AS A HIDDEN BRACKET IT MAY NOT MATTER IF THE
CORNERS HAVE A RADIUS. IN ANY CASE, IT IS MUCH EASIER TO CUT A
RADIUS CORNER THAN A SQUARE OR ACUTE ANGLE.
RADIUS WILL TYPICALLY NEED TO BE 0.020" - 0.040"
CORNER LOOPS ARE EFFECTIVE FOR ALL THICKNESSES AND
TYPICALLY USE A DIAMETER CLOSE TO MATERIAL THICKNESS.

SWITCH BETWEEN TWO CUT CONDITIONS. WHEN THE PROGRAMMED
CUTTING PATH REACHES A SPECIFIED DISTANCE FROM THE CORNER THE
CUT CONDITION WILL CHANGE TO A LOWER VALUE AT A SLOWER
FEEDRATE TO PREVENT BURNING. THIS DISTANCE IS SET BY PARAMETER
AND IS TYPICALLY 0.010" - 0.020". WHEN USING POWER RAMPING, THE
FAST CONDITION (G82) IS SET IN THE LASER ON SUBPROGRAM AND THE
SLOW CONDITION (G81) IS INSERTED INTO THE MAIN PROGRAM AT THE
POINT WHERE YOU NEED IT. RAMPING IS CANCELED WITH A G83. BOTH
CONDITIONS MUST CUT WITH THE SAME ASSIST GAS PRESSURE. (SEE THE
MAZAK PROGRAMMING MANUAL FOR EXAMPLES)
A SUBPROGRAM IS CALLED UP AT EACH CORNER WHICH
TURNS THE BEAM OFF AND DWELLS FOR A SPECIFIED PERIOD OF TIME SO
THAT THE ASSIST GAS CAN COOL THE SPOT.
THE FEEDRATE DECELERATES AT EACH CORNER
AUTOMATICALLY BUT THE POWER REMAINS CONSTANT.
