7.4 FIRE

Captain and crew should be trained in fire awareness and firefighting techniques. General
principles include keeping the bilge's clean, check regularly for corroded electrical terminals,
water, fuel and gas leaks and never place unsecured or flammables anywhere near potential
fire sources. Knowing the following features on your boat are essential to dealing with fires.
A. The ship should be equipped with portable fire extinguishers, placed under the stairs
and at the cockpit entrance. Always keeps the fire extinguishing equipment regularly
serviced/replaced within date limits as to remain in perfect working condition.
B. Safety exits are Fwd cabin deck hatches, midship escape hatches and cockpit door.
When loading your boat always keep exit and access paths clear from obstruction
C. Be aware with any fire inside a compartment; that the hatches will be hot and opening
them will fuel the fire with oxygen. The engine bays are fitted with a small fire
extinguisher access so there is no need to open the hatch.
D. Remember to shut of the fuel valves in the tank locker for any fires with machinery run
on diesel.
E. The gas locker is equipped with an automatic electric shutoff valve as a backup always
shut off the manual valves on the gas tanks when not regularly in use.
F. Know where the master electrical shutoff switches are.
