TROUBLESHOOTING
The B&G Navigation instrumentation is highly robust and sophisticated. B&G instruments are
daisy chained together with digital plug connected cabling. With the first instance of
malfunction check the digital cable connections. Some instruments can operate unattended
e.g. Plotter, Autohelm. Consider isolating faulty instruments as a second approach.
The Fluxgate Compass, Autohelm Controller and digital cabling are located behind the lounge
back in the saloon.
The AIS unit is located under navigation desk by removing the access panel.
Instrument problems usually occur at cable connections or in internal software. There is usually
only one problem so check one connection at a time to avoid causing multiple problems.
Software problems can usually be corrected by updating to the latest software version
available for download from B&G.

3.9 RUDDERS

Your boat is equipped with dual retractable rudders. There are many benefits of retractable
boards including the shallow draft it offers which allows exploration in much shallower waters
and anchoring at more sheltered locations.
The rudders are raised and lowered by hand. The rudder has a constant chord ¾ of its length,
along this section of board the rudder the rudder will be held in position by friction. There is a
locking pin on the side of the rudder case which must be removed to raise the rudder.
The steering has been designed to have a light and responsive feel with 1.25 turns lock to lock.
It is a dual wheel dual rudder mechanical system as per shown diagram with built in rudder
acumen which means at full lock the inner and outer rudders steer at different angles.
If any of the 4 wheel/rudder points has a problem it can be individually disconnected easily
leaving the other items operational. Regularly check the linkage ball joints are tight and well
lubricated and any connections for signs of wear.
At slow speeds or in reverse the rudders are less effective and the Left/ Right throttle control
of the engines affect more of the steering. With practice and one propeller in reverse the boat
can be pivoted inside its own length or even walked directly sideways. Note that the steering
behavior at slow speed is different when steering with engines. Under sail or at speed the
entire boat approximates a consistent radius whereas steering with engines the bow will swing
more freely.
When at the helm always keep an eye on your instruments and be aware of blind spots
particularly when the head sails are set. If required in busy traffic ask one of the crew to act as
