Characteristics with high power output requests:
The electric motors support the combustion
R
engine (boost effect), e.g. when the car is pull-
ing away or accelerating.
The high-voltage battery is discharging.
R
Characteristics when the accelerator pedal is
released during the journey:
The electric motor on the rear axle is operated
R
as an alternator when in overrun mode and
during braking.
The high-voltage battery is charging.
R
%
In drive program Î, the vehicle drives
purely electrically, in drive programs o,
C B and I the combustion engine
is always on (
page 184).

Notes on electric mode:
Vehicles with hybrid systems in electric mode
R
generate significantly less noise when station-
ary and when being driven than vehicles with
combustion engines.
When you are driving in electric mode, the
R
vehicle may not be heard by other road users
due to the significantly lower noise generated.
For this reason the vehicle is equipped with a
sound generator, which serves as an acoustic
vehicle alerting system (AVAS). This safety
device is prescribed by law.
The external noise of the sound generator is
perceptible in the vehicle interior at low
speeds and does not represent a malfunction.
If not all of the vehicle conditions for electric
R
mode are met, then the combustion engine is
switched on.
Notes on the acoustic vehicle alerting system:
The sound generator generates a stationary
R
noise and speed-dependent vehicle noise
emissions up to a speed of about 30 km/h
when the vehicle is driving both forwards and
in reverse.
This helps other road users, particularly
R
pedestrians and cyclists, to hear your vehicle
better.
Driving and parking 167
When you drive at speeds above 20 km/h the
R
acoustic vehicle alerting system gradually
switches the vehicle noise emissions off.
▌Manual disconnection of the high-voltage on-
board electrical system
& DANGER Risk of death and fire due to
modified and/or damaged components of
the high-voltage on-board electrical sys-
tem
The vehicle's high-voltage on-board electrical
system is under high voltage. If you modify
component parts in the vehicle's high-voltage
on-board electrical system or touch damaged
component parts, you may be electrocuted. In
addition, modified and/or damaged compo-
nents may cause a fire.
In the event of an accident or impact to the
vehicle underbody, components of the high-
voltage electrical system may be damaged
although the damage is not visible.
Never make any modifications to the
#
high-voltage on-board electrical system.
