Learn about ink drop jetting

VarioPrint i-series MICR ink drop jetting
The VarioPrint i-series MICR printheads can produce five drop sizes.
[467] Five different drop sizes
Drop size modulation
The printheads use different drop sizes for job printing. It depends on the media and the print
speed which drop sizes are used. Coated media use a larger drop size than uncoated media. This
mechanism is called drop size modulation.
Media surface characteristics such as surface roughness and the type of coating determine how a
ink drop behaves when it touches the media. The media definition has parameters that determine
which drop sizes the printheads will use for the media.

Nozzle failure detection
The printer prints quality control sheets to inspect if nozzles work properly. When the printer has
detected failing nozzles these nozzles are shut down. The nozzle failure compensation mechanism
then starts to compensate the shut down nozzles.
Quality control sheets contain solid color areas to refresh all nozzles in the CMYK printheads and
lines to detect nozzle failures.
