Element Cleaning
It is not recommended that filter elements be cleaned.
Cummins and most other manufacturers will not warrant a
cleaned air filter.
Air Cleaner Body
Before installing the filter element, remove foreign material
(leaves, lint or other foreign matter) that may have collected
inside the air cleaner body. Inspect the inside of the body for
damage that would interfere with air flow or with the fins on
the element or inside the body. Be sure to clean the sealing
surface of the outlet tube and the inside of the outlet tube,
taking care not to damage the sealing area on the tube.
Precleaner
The Precleaner (1) (Figure 7-9) prevents large debris from
1
entering the Air Cleaner and should be cleaned periodically,
especially when working in severe dust conditions. Remove
the top half of the precleaner by releasing the two latches on
2
the sides of the precleaner. Remove all debris from inside
precleaner and reassemble.

Vacuator Valve
Vacuator valves (20, Figure 7-3, 2, Figure 7-9 and
Figure 7-10) are designed to expel loose dust and dirt from
the air cleaner body automatically, thus lengthening the
element service life. The valve lips must point straight down
and be kept free from debris to operate effectively. Mud and
chaff can lodge in these lips periodically and hold them open
during engine operation.
