8 AUTOSIZING

Your Covermeter includes AutoSize - a feature which automatically calculates
an estimate of the size of a reinforcement bar and the depth of cover. The
autosize estimated values are displayed on the reading screen in a small font
size alongside standard readings.

You do not need to configure anything to use autosize; just switch it on and off
as required.

The values of bar size and depth of cover provided by autosize are estimates
only and are independent of the value of bar size you have entered.
The autosize bar size estimate is typically used as a check that the value of bar
size entered manually is accurate. If the two values are significantly different,
you should use the orthogonal SIZE feature to accurately determine bar size -
see "Measuring size of reinforcement bars (orthogonal)" on page 29.
When the search head is not directly over a reinforcement bar, the autosizing
values are meaningless and should be ignored.
In congested situations, autosizing will tend to over-estimate bar diameter,
correctly reflecting the fact that there is a greater mass of metal present than a
single bar. Nevertheless, autosizing will continue to give an essentially correct
value for the cover.
In the case of lapped bars, autosizing will typically show double the true
diameter of a single bar, but the correct cover, which is generally the desired
result.
