Enabling the RIP Routing Protocol on a Port
IPX RIP (Routing Information Protocol) is widely implemented and used
extensively on IPX internetworks. IPX Routing Services use the RIP
routing protocol to send and gather information about the internetwork
topology. This information is used to construct and maintain a database,
called the RIP Route Table, containing the addresses and available routes
to all the networks and hosts that RIP learns.
Enabling the RIP routing protocol allows IPX Routing Services to build
and maintain a dynamic database of route information. The best routes
learned by the RIP routing protocol are added to the IPX Forwarding
Table to be used to forward IPX packets. The ability to switch the RIP
routing protocol on and off on a port-by-port basis provides great
flexibility. On the same device, some router ports can be running the RIP
routing protocol while other router ports are not. If necessary, you can
temporarily disable the RIP routing protocol on any port without affecting
the rest of your configuration.
