Installing
– Install in the reverse order of removal. When doing this, note
the following:
– Shafts and flaps -arrows- must engage in their respective
guides.
– After pushing together the two parts of the air distribution
housing, check flaps for ease of movement.
– Further assembly is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
5.8 Checking auxiliary air heater element -

Special tools and workshop equipment required
♦ Vehicle diagnostic tester with 100 A pick-up clamp - VAS
5051B/7-
Check
Test conditions:
• Intake temperature lower than 19°C
• Coolant temperature less than 80°C
• Passenger compartment temperature approx. 20°C
• Battery voltage greater than 11 V
• Alternator load not greater than 50% (terminal DF)
• Engine speed greater than 450 rpm
• Turn rotary knob for interior temperature to highest tempera‐
ture (on vehicles with Climatronic select highest level).
Test sequence
– Remove knee airbag ⇒ General body repairs, interior; Rep.
gr. 69 ; Knee airbags; Removing and installing knee airbag
with igniter .
– Remove footwell vent on driver side
– Remove footwell trim.
– Using vehicle diagnostic tester and the 100-A pick-up clamp -
VAS 5051B/7- , measure current draw at earth wire -arrow-.
Low heat output: ≈ 30 amps
Medium heat output: ≈ 60 amps
High heat output: ≈ 80 amps
