Pilot Holes
When a screw is driven into a material, such
as wood, it can act as a wedge, generating
outward pressure which can cause many
materials to split. Drilling a small pilot hole
where the screw will be driven causes less
'wedging' to take place, thereby reducing the
likelihood of the material being split. It also
reduces the possibility of the screw head
getting sheared off by torque.
