5.5. Powering Sequence
Switching on
1. Turn the computer on.
2. Start up the program using one of the options below:
− By clicking the program icon available from the computer desktop;
− By launching the file NOVA.exe available from the program folder.
The main program window will appear on the computer monitor.
3. Turn the SPM controller on.
4. Power on the temperature control unit.
5. Turn the thermocontroller on.
ATTENTION! Tighten up all connectors before turning the instrument on.
Disconnection of connectors during operation may cause damage to the
electronic components.
After turning the controller on, the computer control program performs
the initialization procedure to determine the current configuration of the instrument.
On the completion of the initialization procedure, the system status indicator, available
from the left bottom corner of the program main window, is set to indicate one of the
three states:
– successful initialization, the instrument is ready for operation;
– SPM controller has not been turned on;
– either no interface board available or the controller is malfunctioning.
NOTE. It is recommended to turn on the controller 40 minutes before starting
measurements to achieve the steady state condition.
The instrument is now ready for operation.
ATTENTION! Perform calibration of the ADC Z with respect to the DAC Z
during the first run of the control program Nova after its reinstallation, or
after replacement of the controller, with the controller being on (the probe
must be taken away from the sample). This calibration is necessary for correct
implementation of two-pass techniques and height based spectroscopy. To
