measures equivalent to what is found on a wired network, and conforms to the IEEE
802.11 specification for "Wired Equivalent Privacy." This security system provides 40-
bit RC4 encryption of the radio transmission which occur between the RangeLAN802
devices. Each RangeLAN802 unit must have the same Encryption Key in order to
communicate when Security is set to Authentication only or Authentication and Data. In
addition, all devices must be configured to use the same level of Security; i.e., all devices
must be configured to either Authentication only or Authentication and Data in order to
communicate. By default, Security is set to none.
The ESSID is a string that must match on all communicating RangeLAN802 products.
All Access Points and clients that are involved in a roaming network will have the same
ESSID, unless the client is set to associate with "Any" ESSID.
The Hopping Pattern defines a hopping sequence as specified in the IEEE 802.11
specification. All Access Points in a roaming environment must have a unique Hopping
Pattern. For a compatibility table between Proxim's RangeLAN802 Hopping Pattern
and other IEEE 802.11 products' Set and Patterns, see Appendix E.
The Encryption Key can be set whether or not Security is enabled; however, it is only
used once the Security setting has been configured to either Authentication Only or
Authentication and Data. All RangeLAN802 communicating devices must have the
same Encryption Key. Once entered on the RangeLAN802 Access Point, the Encryp-
tion Key can be overwritten, but never read back. It is stored on the hardware of the unit
itself, and will be retained as the unit is power cycled or moved.

When enabled, the 10BaseT Link Monitor will automatically detect whether or not the
Access Point has an operational 10BaseT connection to the Ethernet. A 10BaseT link
will be unavailable if no 10BaseT patch cable has been plugged into the Access Point, if
