1. General
1.1
Use
The KESSEL double flap backwater
valve, KESSEL flood water shutoff valve
and KESSEL single flap backwater
valve are intended for installation in
gravity fed wastewater pipes.
The double flap backwater valve and the single
flap backwater valve prevent backflow from the
sewers while the flood water shutoff valve pre-
vents flood water from entering via the drains.
The double flap backwater valve, flood
water shutoff valve and single flap backwa-
ter valve must be kept in good working order
at all times and be easily accessible. The
flaps are normally closed and open auto-
matically to allow outflowing water to pass.
The double flap backwater valve and flood
water shutoff valve have a manually locka-
ble flap as an emergency stop. This enables
the valve to be opened and closed manual-
ly. If out of operation for a prolonged period,
the emergency flap should be kept closed.
The single flap backwater valve does not
have the manual locking capability.
Only the double flap backwater valve
meets DIN 1997 and offers additional se-
curity due to the double flaps.
The requirements of DIN 1986 apply to the ent-
ire drainage system and therefore also for the
double flap backwater valve, the flood water
shutoff valve and single flap backwater valve.

Construction
The KESSEL Staufix
®
single flap backwa-
ter valve consists of the main body (1), an
insert housing with flap (2) and the cover
(5) with a backflow flap.
The KESSEL Staufix
®
flood water shutoff
valve consists of the body (1), the „push-

The KESSEL Staufix
®
double flap back-
water valve consists of the body (1), an in-
sert housing with flap (2), the „push-fit"

housing with flap (3) and the cover (4) with
hand lever for emergency closure.
The single flap backwater valve and flood
water shutoff valve can be converted to
double flap backwater valves in accordan-
ce with DIN 1997 (see Chapter 5).

2. Installation

Each device is supplied ready for opera-
tion and need only be connected to the exi-
sting sewage conduit at the site.
3. Inspection
The double flap backwater valve, flood
water shutoff valve and the single flap
backwater valve should be inspected once
a month by the operator or by a represen-
tative of the operator.
On the double flap backwater valve and
the flood water shutoff valve the emergen-
cy flap should be checked by opening and
closing it several times. Once the inspec-
tion is complete, be sure to leave the ma-
nual locking lever in the „open" position.
