working on in those programs in working memory. Your
computer can access this working memory very quickly,
but it does not automatically keep the data when you
turn your computer off. If you want to continue working
where you left off the next time you turn on your
computer, you must start your software programs again
and reopen your data files. Any personal data you did
not save to a file before you turned your computer off is
lost. (Saved files are not lost.)
If you enable Rapid Resume before you turn off your
computer, Rapid Resume stores the program
information and unsaved personal data from the
working memory area to a special file on your hard disk.
(This is called suspending.) Then when you turn on your
computer again, Rapid Resume uses this special file to
restore your desktop. (This is called resuming.) Personal
data you did not save to file before you turned off your
computer is also restored.
It is always a good idea to save all personal data to a file
Note:
periodically and before you turn your computer off.
To enable (turn on) or disable (turn off) the Rapid
Resume feature, follow these steps:
1.
Double-click on the Rapid Resume icon in the
Rapid Resume Manager window.
2.
In the Rapid Resume window, follow the
instructions on the screen. If you need help,
press F1.
With the Rapid Resume feature enabled, you can save
your desktop by selecting Suspend from the Start
button on your desktop when you are ready to turn off
your computer. Suspend saves your desktop and then
turns off your computer. To specify whether the system
on/off button saves your desktop before turning off the
power, you must use the Setup Utility. See "On/off
button mode" on page 45 for these instructions.
For more technical information about the Rapid Resume
feature, refer to the README.TXT file located in the
IBMTOOLS directory of your computer.

Automatic Power Off

The Automatic Power Off feature automatically turns off
your computer when you have not used your computer
for an amount of time you specify. If you have an energy
saving monitor with Display Power Management
Signaling (DPMS), this feature can also turn off your
monitor.
In the Setup Utility, you can specify which devices your
computer checks to determine whether you are using
your computer. For these instructions, see "Rapid
Resume advanced options" on page 43.
You can enable the Automatic Power Off feature only
after you enable the Rapid Resume feature. Rapid
Resume saves the state of your desktop when
Automatic Power Off turns off your computer.
