3. Correct the problem
Isolating a malf unct ion is as important as
co r rect i ng the tro uble. Use a good systematic ap -
proach to locate the problem in the minimum
amount of t ime. Al l service operations can be
so lved by following these three steps:
Obtain from t he owner an accurate descr iption of
the trouble, operat ing cond it ions, and mai n-
tenance history. In many cases, these will he lp to
isolate the trouble. Sometimes solving the problem
is not enough, and the cause has created ot her un-
detected problems. Use the Troub les hoot ing Cha rts
as a guide i n solving the problem . If additional in-
terrelated problems exist, refer to appropr iate
portion of Sect ion 3 for major repa ir procedures .

Engine Problem
Engine does not start - no
spark.
Condition
1. Key switch not ON or ma l-
functioning.
2. Eme rgency stop switch in
OFF position or malfunction-
ing.
3. Spark plug(s) fouled, oiled
or damaged .
4. Plug cap(s) damaged, leaking
or shorted.
5. High tension wire(s) loose,
grounded or shorted.
6. Defective CDI igniter.
7 . Defective exciter co il.
8. Defective pulser co il.
9. Defective ignition coil.
10. Weak flywheel magnets.
Engine will not start - does not 1. Fuel tank empty .

2. Cracked, broken or pinched
fuel line .
3. Obstructed or damaged
f uel pump filter.
4. Carburetor jets plugged or
fuel pump malfunctioning.
5. Impulse line is cracked,
broken or pinched.
6. Carburetor adjusted in-
correctly.
Remedy
1. Turn switch ON or rep lace.
2. Move switch to ON or re -
place stop switch.
3. Rep lace spark plug(s) .
4. Replace plug cap(s).
5 . Service high tension wire(s)/
coil(s).
6. Rep lace CD I igniter.
7. Replace exciter co il.
8. Replace pulser coil.
9. Replace ignit ion co il.
10. Replace the flywheel.
1. Fill fuel tank with fuel.
2. Replace the fuel line.
3. Clean or replace fuel
pump filter.
4. Service the carburetor
or the fuel pump.
5. Replace the impulse line.
6. Adjust the carburetor.
