7. If the t iming is incorrect, looseil the stator
pla te screws through ho les in the f lywheel,
and reposition the stator plate as requi red
(clockwise to retard timing - counterclockw ise
to advance t iming) to correct the timing. (See
Figure 2-53.)
When adjusting the stator plate, take care
not to damage the coil windings.
8. Tighten the stator plate screws and recheck
tim ing.
9. When the ig nition timing is correct, remove the
timing light and repl ace the recoi l starter.

Alternate Method of Timing
Adjustment
1. Remove t he dr ive bel t and instal l a fabricated
pointer onto the engine as shown . (See Fig ure
2-54.) For accuracy, it is im portant to attac h
the po inter to the eng ine ra t her than the
chassis so t he poi nte r can move w ith the
eng ine on its mounting system.
2. Remove the spark plug from t he RH cyl inder
and install a dial ind icato r in to th e RH cy linde r
spark p lug hole .
3. Rotate the drive converter in t he normal
direction of rotation (coun terclockwise) to fi nd
TOC. Rotate the drive converter c lockwise to
0.073 in . (1.86 mm) before TOC . Mark t he drive
converter opposite the timing pointer. (See Fig-
ure
2-54.)

4. Remove the dial indicator, and reinsta l l the
spa rk plug.
5. Wi th the converter guard secured in place, run
the engine at 6,500 RPM. Direct the timing
ligh t th rough the ope n ing in the converter
guard directl y over the timing pointer. The
t im ing is co rrect when the mark on the con-
verter ali gns wi t h the pointer as the timing
light f lashes. (See Fig ure 2-55.)
