Steering Lock
0 The key can be w ithdraw n in
this position only. The steering
is locked w ith the key rem oved
from the steering lock. The key
can be rem oved only with the
selector lever in position " P " .
A fter rem oving the key or with
the key in steering lock posi­
tion 0, the selector lever is
locked in position " P " .

1 Steering is unlocked.
(If necessary, m ove steering
wheel slightly to allow the key
to be turned clockw ise to
position 1.)
2 Driving position.
3 Starting position.
R efer to Index for Starting and
turning o ff the engine.
W arning!
W h en leaving th e vehicle
alw ays rem ove th e key from
the steering lock. Do not leave
child ren unattended in the
vehicle. U nsupervised use of
veh icle equ ip m en t may cause
serious personal injury.
Notes:
The follow ing item s can be o pe r­
ated with the key in steering lock
position 1:
wiper,
headlam p flasher,
lighter,
glove box lamp,
sound system (also in position 0),
sliding roof,
rear window defroster,
power windows,
power seats, front,
heated seats, front,
adjustable steering wheel.
An audible w arning will sound
w hen the d rive r's door is opened
with the key in steering lock
position 1 or 0.
W ith the engine at idle speed, the
charging rate of the alternator
(output) is lim ited.
It is therefore recom m ended to
turn off unnecessary electrical
consum ers w hile d riving in
stop-and-go traffic. This precaution
helps to avoid draining of the
battery.
U nnecessary strain on the battery
and charging system may be
m inim ized by turning off the
follow ing pow er consum ers, for
exam ple: Heated seats, rear
w indow defroster. In addition, the
autom atic clim ate air volum e
control should be set to " M IN " .
