W hen noticing fluid loss or gear
shifting m alfunctions, we recom ­
m end to have yo ur authorized
M ercedes-B enz dealer check the

transm ission fluid level.

The transm ission fluid level should
only be checked with the engine
idling, parking brake engaged and
selector lever in position " P " . The
vehicle m ust be parked on level
ground.
Prior to the check, allow engine to
idle for approx. 1 to 2 m inutes.
M easure fluid level with the
d ip stick com pletely inserted and
the locking lever released (1).
Extrem e clea nline ss m ust be
observed! To w ipe the dipstick,
use a clean, lint-free cloth.
To fill the transm ission with fluid,
pour it through a fine-m esh filter
into the dip stick opening. Even the
slightest im purity m ay cause
operational troubles.
The fluid level in the transm ission
is d ependent upon its tem pera­
ture. The m axim um and m inim um
fluid level m arks on the dipstick
are app lica ble references only if
the transm ission fluid level has
reached its norm al operating
tem perature of 1 7 6 °F (80°C ).
Im portant!
If the transm ission fluid cools
down to 68 - 8 6 °F (20 - 3 0°C ),
w hich is the norm al shop tem pera­
ture range, then the m axim um
fluid level w ill be approxim ately
0.4 in (10 mm) below the m ini­
m um m ark on the dipstick. We
stress this point because a fluid
change is norm ally perform ed
when the transm ission fluid has
cooled down to shop tem perature.
The fluid level m ust not exceed
the d ip stick m axim um m ark with
the fluid at operating tem perature.
Drain or siphon excess fluid, if
required.
Then push d ip stick all the way
in and sw ing locking lever
dow nw ards (2).
