8.9 Charge-Air Cooling

8.9.1 Intercooler – Checking condensate drain for coolant leakage and obstruction
DANGER
Components are moving or rotating.
Risk of crushing, danger of parts of the body being caught or pulled in!
• Operate the engine at low load only. Keep clear of the danger zone of the engine.
WARNING
High level of engine noise when the engine is running.
Risk of damage to hearing!
• Wear suitable hearing protection.
WARNING
Compressed air gun ejects a jet of pressurized air.
Risk of injury to eyes and damage to hearing, risk of rupturing internal organs!
• Never direct air jet at people.
• Always wear safety goggles/face mask and hearing protection.
Intercooler – Checking conden-
sate drain for coolant leakage
and obstruction
1.
With the engine running, check if air escapes
from the condensate drain bore(s) on the
right and left of the engine (driving end). If no
air escapes:
• Clean condensate drain bore(s)
• Blow out with compressed air
2.
If a large amount of coolant is continuously
discharged, the intercooler is leaking. Con-
tact Service.
Emergency measures prior to engine start with a leaking intercooler
1.
Remove injectors (→ Page 250).
2.
Bar engine manually (→ Page 218).
3.
Bar engine with starting system to blow out combustion chambers (→ Page 220).
4.
Install injectors (→ Page 250).
