Chapter 22 – Calibrating Your CGM System

22.1 Calibration Overview

The Dexcom G6 CGM does not require
that you calibrate following the sensor
startup period if you entered the sensor
code when you started the sensor ses-
sion. If you enter the sensor code you
will not be prompted to calibrate. If your
symptoms do not match the current
sensor reading, you may optionally cali-
brate your sensor at any time following
these steps.
If you did not enter a sensor code when
starting the sensor session, you will be
prompted to calibrate at the following
intervals:
2-hour startup: 2 calibrations 2
hours after you start your sensor
session
12-hour update: 12 hours after the
2 hour start up calibration
24-hour update: 24 hours after the
2 hour start up calibration
Every 24 hours: every 24 hours after
the 24-hour update

When notified
On the first day of your sensor session,
you must enter 4 blood glucose values
into your pump to calibrate. You must
enter 1 blood glucose value to calibrate
every 24 hours after your first startup
calibration. The pump will remind you
when the System needs these calibra-
tions. In addition, you may be prompt-
ed to enter additional blood glucose
values to calibrate as needed.
PRECAUTION
DO NOT calibrate when your trend arrow is up,
double-up, down, or double-down because your
BG is changing at more than 2 mg/dL per min-
ute.
When calibrating, you must enter your
blood glucose values into the pump by
hand. You can use any commercially
available blood glucose meter. You
must calibrate with accurate blood glu-
cose meter values to get accurate sen-
sor glucose readings.
Follow these important instructions
when obtaining blood glucose
values for calibration:
Blood glucose values used for
calibration must be between 40 to
400 mg/dL and must have been
taken within the past 5 minutes.
Your sensor cannot be calibrated if
the glucose value from your meter is
less than 40 mg/dL. For safety
reasons, if your blood glucose is
low, first treat your low blood
glucose.
Make sure a sensor glucose
reading shows in the upper right
portion of the CGM Home Screen
before calibrating.
Make sure the antenna symbol is
visible to the right of the battery
indicator on the CGM Home Screen
and is active (white, not greyed out)
before calibrating.
Always use the same meter to
calibrate that you routinely use to
measure your blood glucose. Do
not switch your meter in the middle
