This section applies to the balancing of the ailerons, elevators, and rudder. You must make sure of control surface balance
after repair or painting.

Procedures for Balancing Control Surfaces
NOTE:
It is required that control surface balancing be accomplished in a draft-free room or area.
NOTE:
When balancing control surfaces make sure surfaces are clean, all foreign material inside the control
surfaces is removed, and the control surfaces are complete as indicated in the appropriate section.
Install weights using only the existing attachment provisions. Do not change the control surface
structure. If balancing cannot be done within the limitations specified by the balancing procedures, it
may be possible to reduce weight by removing excessive paint and repainting. If weight cannot be
corrected to allow balancing, the control surface must be replaced.
A.
Control Surface Balancing Fixture Procedures.
(1) Adjust beam to fit onto control surface. Refer to Figure 1 and following procedure.
(a) Beam is to be located as specified for individual control surface.
NOTE:
(b) Align the beam so that it is positioned 90 degrees to the hinge line and the centerline mark on beam (0 position)
is directly over the hinge line.
(c) Adjust the hanger assembly to fit against the trailing edge of the control surface so that the beam is parallel to
the chord of the control surface. Check position of the beam centerline mark to ensure that it is still directly over
the hinge line. Tighten bolts to maintain setting of hanger.
(d) Mark the location of the beam on the control surface and remove the beam assembly from the control surface.
(2) Balance the beam assembly. Refer to Figure 2and perform the following procedures.
NOTE:
(a) Put the beam assembly on the knife edge (it must be sharp) of one mandrel at the center line of the beam
assembly (in notch).
(b) Move the weight (fastened by a bolt) along the beam assembly as required to allow the beam assembly to be
balanced. Hold the weight in position by tightening the bolt. Washers can be added to the long screw (at the
same end of the beam as the bolt mounted weight) to adjust the fine balance of the beam assembly.
(3) Put the mandrels on a level flat surface in position to accept the control surface to be balanced and put the control
surface onto the mandrels. Refer to Figure 3 and do the following.
(a) Control surfaces with hinge bolts are to be put on the mandrels such that the hinge bolt shank rests on the knife
edge portion of the mandrel. Use either end of the mandrel.
NOTE:
(4) (Refer to Figure 3). Balance the control surface as follows:
(a) Put the adjusted and balanced beam assembly onto the control surface (as previously marked) and put the
sliding weight onto the beam assembly.
(b) Put the sliding weight so the control surface is balanced (control surface chord line should be parallel to level flat
surface). (The control surface is level when the distance from the flat surface to the trailing edge chord line is
equal to the distance from the flat surface to the center of the hinge bolt or hinge line). Read the number on the

Do not let the beam or hanger assembly rest upon any rivet heads.
The beam must be rebalanced for each individual control surface that is to be balanced.
The control surface is to be put on the mandrels such that no part of the control surface
contacts the mandrel except the hinge bolt or hinge pin.
