CAUTION: Do not use substitute fasteners on PSE structures. No fastener substitution is allowed on PSE
structures or on engine inlet structures. Refer to Principal Structural Elements - General, for definition of
PSE's
A.
When adapting the typical repairs shown in this manual to suit actual conditions, it can be found necessary to use different
fasteners than those factory installed. This can be because a particular fastener is not available, restricted access, or other
difficulties. Care must be taken to check fastener head marking, actual fastener size, and condition of holes. Reinstall like
fasteners if hole size requirements are met.
B.
Substitution factors for rivet replacement are as follows: the quantity of substitute rivets required, shear strength, gage of
material to be riveted and rivet spacing.
2.
General Fastener Replacement
A.
Table 1 shows rivets in shear strength order. Any fastener listed below the type specified in a repair will be a satisfactory
substitute, for shear strength consideration. When selecting substitutes, consideration must be given to hole size,
installation difficulties, head configuration and electrolytic corrosion due to the use of dissimilar metals. Table 1 must not
be used to specify substitutes for fasteners used in tension applications.

NOTE:
For shear type applications, any fastener below the specified type will have satisfactory strength
when substituted for a fastener above it in Table 1. Refer to General Fastener Replacement for use
and limitations of this table.
B.
Do not use an alternative flush head fastener which requires a countersink to be enlarged more than that specified for the
original fastener. However, a larger head fastener can be used to fill an oversize countersink, followed by a head shaving
operation.
C. When you install HL19PB70 Hi-Lok fasteners, it is permitted (in special applications such as inadequate clearance) to
install MS21043-08 nuts instead of HL70 Hi-Lok collars.
D. Huckbolt pin, swage locking type H3L-100DT fasteners, can be used for S3L-100DT fasteners in all cases; however, S3L-
100DT fasteners must not be used for H3L-100DT fasteners.
