NOTE:
B.
Prime as soon as possible, but within 4 hours.
NOTE:
It is recommended that the part be primed as soon as the chemical film is dry (about 30 minutes).
After 4 hours, the chemical film treated area must be solvent wiped before priming.
C. Touchup of chemical film.
(1) To touch up chemical film treated areas, use the above procedure, including the abrasive clean. Abrasive clean the
smallest possible area to repair the chemical film.
(2) Stripping of chemical film must be done by abrasive cleaning with ScotchBrite pads.
D. Pretreatment Primer
(1) If chemical film treatment is impossible because the assembly is made of dissimilar metals, shape, size, or location,
apply pretreat primer (refer to Pretreatment Priming).
8.
Pretreatment of Cadmium Plate
WARNING: Do not sand or abrasive clean cadmium because of its toxicity.
A.
Cadmium plated parts that are to be painted and do not have a corrosion coating on the plating must be pretreatment
primed.
(1) Process:
(a) Solvent wipe.
(b) Apply pretreatment primer. Refer to Pretreatment Priming
(c) Apply fuel and corrosion resistant primer.
(2) If the cadmium plate is damaged, the above process must be used to repair the damage. In areas where the repair
will be exposed to fuel or phosphate ester hydraulic fluid, also apply Type 1 Class B sealant over the primer to
prevent deterioration of primer. Refer to Model 510 Maintenance Manual, Fuel, Weather, Pressure and High-
Temperature Sealing - Maintenance Practices.
9.
Pretreatment of Copper
A.
If copper requires painting, the following procedure must be performed.
(1) Solvent wipe. Refer to Manual Cleaning.
(2) Abrasive clean. Refer to Manual Deoxidizing.
(3) Apply fuel and corrosion resistant primer.
10. Pretreatment of Steel
NOTE:
No sanding of landing gear or other parts is permitted if the parts have been shot peened.
A.
To remove rust, scale, and soil, abrade the surface to be painted with 325 grit sandpaper (150 grit is permissible if rust is
heavy). Refer to Manual Deoxidizing.
(1) Steel must be uniformly bright and "white" in color.
(a) Wipe surfaces with a tack rag.
(b) Apply pretreatment primer. Refer to Pretreatment Primer.
NOTE:
(c) Apply fuel and corrosion resistant primer.
(2) Refer to Pretreatment of Cadmium Plate if the cadmium plate on steel fasteners has been removed.
11. Pretreatment of Corrosion Resistant Steel
A.
Pretreatment
(1) If corrosion resistant steel needs to be cleaned, abrasive clean until clean and "white". Refer to Manual Deoxidizing.
(2) If dissimilar metal protection is needed:
(a) Abrasive clean. Refer to Manual Deoxidizing.
(b) Apply fuel and corrosion resistant primer immediately after cleaning.

If a surface is allowed to dry before pretreatment is completed, start over with manual
deoxidizing.
If the part will be exposed to fuel, oils, and/or phosphate ester hydraulic fluid while in
service, do not apply the pretreatment primer.
