.Appendix G
We need to activate the printer port. Assuming you placed the interface card in
the Apple slot # 1, type:
P R # 1
< c r >
The computer output will now be routed to the printer port, AND to the screen.
(If you used a different slot number, use that same number above and in all
printer related commands.)
To see if everything is hooked up and properly initialized, type:
L I S T
< c r >
and the program should be LISTed on the screen and Printer.
However
The Apple screen is limited to 40 characters, and it imposes the same limitation
on the Printer. This severely restricts the MX-80.
To overcome this limitation, we type:
<CNTRL I > 8 0 N
< c r >
The Control I followed by 80N sets computer output to 80 columns — a good
starting match for the MX-80. The " 8 0 N " can be any number from 40 to 255 as
far as the computer is concerned. The MX-80 might have some other ideas, how-
ever.
Having exceeded the 40 character screen limitation, the computer output no
longer goes to the screen — only the Printer. Everything
goes to the printer even
input statements, and Nothing goes to the screen. In this mode, questions requir-
ing keyboard response should be asked by PRINT statements — the answers
picked up by separate INPUT statements.
Since all these commands can be sent at either the command or BASIC program
levels, it is possible to use software to switch back and forth, using the screen and
Printer for alternate outputs, or the same, formatted differently.
To default back to 40 column screen AND printer, type:
<CTRL I > I
< c r >
