Chapter 9
Finally, press the FF button again.
Where did the paper stop this time? Yep. At the top of the next form.
And that just about covers all the "obvious" buttons and switches on the MX-80.
Learning how to use it is not very formidable at all, if we take our time.
The Final Checkout
The final part of this checkout takes about 10 minutes. It's an important thing to
do, and shows us many of the print characters that are available.
Turn the Printer OFF. Hold the LF button down and turn the Printer back on at
the same time.
GO!
Wow! Look at that sonofagun go. Open the lid and watch the head printing in
both directions. Move the paper bail out of the way to see better.
We're looking at all of the characters in its memory (except certain replacements
we can switch in using some of the 12 switches inside). Included is the full
TRS-80 graphic character set, (not just the light blocks which are usually SET and
RESET). Yep, we can print graphics on the paper.
Notice that when there is a graphics character in a print line, it only prints from
left to right, returning back to the left when the last graphic character is printed.
It then prints the rest of the graphic character, along with the usual letters, num-
bers and punctuation. Nothing earth-shaking, perhaps, but it demonstrates some
of the Printer's "internal logic" compared to the old "washing machines" of not
so long ago.
When this test is finished, we will automatically be switched ON LINE to the
computer cable.
