TRS-80 Mode, Plus Misc Features
TRS-80 Mode
The MX-80 provides a TRS-80 simulation-mode option. Its capabilities are very
restricted compared to the MX-80 mode, but features graphics located at the same
ASCII addresses as the Model I TRS-80. If you purchased software written for a
standard Radio Shack Line Printer and do not wish to modify it to operate in the
superior MX-80 standard mode, this can be a powerful advantage.
The trade-off for this advantage is a significant loss. Refer to Parts I and II of
Appendix B. Also compare parts I and II of Appendix A. If you are willing to give
up the advantages shown, this mode is quite satisfactory.
To select the TRS-80 mode, locate switch 2-4 and flip it to the ON position. Thru
the hatch, that's to your right. As always, be sure the power cord is unplugged
when flipping internal switches.
TRS-80 Mode Notes
Never add 128 to the ASCII number indicated, since that would put us right in
the middle of the graphics set.
The following 3 modes act something like a 3 speed transmission. Shifting into
one cancels out the others. Printing can only be in one gear at a time. Modes
cannot be mixed on the same line. The Printer is always in one of the 3 modes.
ASCII 29 - COMPRESSED CHARACTER MODE. It behaves generally in
the same way as ASCII 15 in the MX-80 mode. It is necessary to LPRINT
CHRS 30 or 31, switching to another mode, to cancel it.
ASCII 30 - - NORMAL WIDE CHARACTER MODE. In this mode, printing
is quite conventional. 10 characters per inch; 80 CPL. The same as when
initially powered-up.
ASCII 31 -
DOUBLE WIDTH CHARACTER MODE. Unlike the MX-80
mode, it stays in this mode until switched to one of the above. 5 characters
per inch; 40 CPL.
