The EMG graphs above shows a larger Right RMS value compared to the Left RMS value. In the left-hand
example, the two recordings (left and right) have been compared without scaling applied. Without scaling the
asymmetry ratio is very high (0.56) – due to uneven SCM muscle contractions.
The right-hand example shows the curves after scaling has been applied which compensates for the uneven
patient contradiction. The scaling is applied by right clicking on the curve and selecting EMG scaling.
After scaling a very low asymmetry ratio (0.03) is displayed compared to the earlier ratio of 0.56. This exam-
ple highlights that response differences can be due to differences in muscle tonus during recording from the
two sides. Scaling compensates effectively for this and the scaled responses show only a small 0.03 asym-
metry.
