The F reeStyle a nd F reeStyle 5 a re p ortable o xygen c oncentrators ( POC) u sed t o e xtract o xygen
from t he a tmosphere, c oncentrate i t t o 8 7–95.5%, a nd p resent t he o xygen t o t he p atient i n t he
form o f a b olus ( pulse d ose). T hese d evices o perate f rom e ither e xternal p ower o r f rom a
rechargeable b attery p ack.
Description o f O peration
Air e nters t he P OC t hrough a n e xternal a ir i ntake / g ross p article f ilter. T his f iltered a ir
enters t he c ompressor v ia a s uction i ntake m uffler t hat q uiets t he c ompressor's
suction s ound. P ressurized a ir t hen e xits t he c ompressor a nd p asses t hrough a h eat
exchanger t o r educe t he t emperature.
Next, a s olenoid f eed v alve d irects t he a ir i nto o ne o f t wo s ieve b eds t hat c ontain
molecular s ieve. T he u nique p roperty o f m olecular s ieve e nables i t t o p hysically
attract ( adsorb) n itrogen w hen a ir p asses t hrough t his m aterial, t hereby s eparating
the n itrogen f rom t he o xygen i n a mbient a ir.
There a re t wo s ieve b eds: W hile o ne p roduces h igh-­‐concentration o xygen, t he o ther
purges t he n itrogen i t a dsorbed v ia t he s olenoid w aste v alve a nd e xhaust. O xygen
exits t he p roduct t ank a fter f irst p assing t hrough t he i ntegrated p roduct f ilter.
In a ddition t o t he m olecular s ieve a nd p roduct t ank, t he F reeStyle a nd F reeStyle 5
contain a n O xygen C onserving D evice ( OCD) v alve t hat c ontrols d elivery o f h igh-­‐
concentration o xygen t o t he p atient w hen t he p ressure s ensor s enses t he p atient's
inspiration.
