Using HP SIM to manage alert traps

The SCS can be configured to send alert traps to HP Systems Insight Manager (HP SIM).
Discovering the device
HP SIM automatically detects devices as part of the device discovery process. The device should be installed and
running before attempting discovery through HP SIM.
Configuring HP SIM to receive traps
Before HP SIM can receive traps, the correct MIB file (CPQSERIAL.MIB) must be compiled and added into HP SIM.
To register the MIB:
IMPORTANT:
Before beginning this procedure, remove the previous version of CPQSERIAL.MIB.
NOTE:
By default, HP Systems Insight Manager is installed in the C:\Program Files\HP\Systems Insight
Manager directory.
1.
Copy the MIB to the C:\Program Files\HP\Systems Insight Manager\mibs folder. The MIB can be accessed by
manually browsing to the MIB directory on the documentation CD.
2.
From the C:\Program Files\HP\Systems Insight Manager\mibs folder, run mcompile CPQSERIAL.MIB from
the command line to compile the new MIB. A new file named CPQSERIAL.CFG is created.
3.
From the C:\Program Files\HP\Systems Insight Manager\mibs command line enter mxmib –a CPQSERIAL.cfg
to register the new MIB.
4.
From the C:\Program Files\HP\Systems Insight Manager\mibs command line, enter mxmib and verify that the
new MIB is listed.

Configuring the devices to send traps to HP SIM
1.
Add the HP SIM server as an SNMP trap recipient.
server snmp manager add <ip_address>
2.
Configure the device to send alert notifications to HP SIM.
server snmp trap destination add <ip_address>

Using HP Insight Manager 7 SP2 to manage alert traps

The SCS can be configured to send alert traps to HP Insight Manager 7 SP2.

Configure Insight Manager 7 SP2 to receive traps

Configure the device to send traps.

Verify that the device MIB (CPQSERIAL.MIB) is registered in Insight Manager 7.

Upload the CPQSERIAL.MIB. The MIB can be accessed by manually browsing to the MIB directory on the
documentation CD.
2.
Register the MIB.
